There is a high demand for new bioactive compounds in human and animal therapy and plant protection. The search for bioactive compounds needs trustworthy methods for the detection of the desired bioactivity. The combination of (HP)TLC with subsequent bioactivity assays allows the detection of biological effects of separated individual components of complex samples, such as various natural products that are popular sources of new drug candidates.

(HP)TLC–bioactivity assays are widely used for the visualization of antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and enzyme inhibition properties of the analyzed substances.

In the workshop we will cover principles of HPTLC–bioactivity assays and the parameters to consider to obtain valuable bioautogram will be discussed. Furthermore, experiments (HPTLC–antioxidant assay, HPTLC–Bacillus subtilis antibacterial assay, HPTLC–lipase inhibitory assay) will be performed by involving the participants.
